![]() I think it bothers me because I'm a relatively emotional guy and dealt with a lot of gay jokes growing up because of that toxic masculinity, and saw the fellowship as representation that "men" can have feelings too, so to just ship the characters as a gay relationship kind of confirms the taxi views. Thank you for the comments, a lot of you understand where I'm coming from without any hate and some made great points. Just to reiterate, this isn't from a homophobic place, if the characters were gay, that's fine, i see it more as toxic masculinity. I ranted to my GF about it, but she doesn't care as much so I wanted to know how this community feels. To me it takes away from the characters in the same way that men can't be real friends with women because they just want to sleep with them. Not coming from a homophobic point of view, but the male characters all show love and affection towards each other, caring about each other and showing emotional vulnerability, and to reduce that friendship to "oh it's because they are gay" I see it as a form toxic masculinity that the only way for men to have emotions and care for each other is "because gay" Personally I hate it, and I think the idea actually ruins the relationship. I've seen a lot of posts on Twitter recently of people trying to ship Frodo and Sam together saying that they are clearly gay and a couple (I see it alot from LGBT users) and I wanted to know your thoughts.
